Pompeii Ruins

We were entering the site of the ruins at 9 am, before the hordes of other tourists would arrive.

Even from the pathway to the entrance we could see remains of the ancient walls of Pompeii where the harbor would have been  2,000 ears ago.(it is no longer anywhere near the sea)

Restoration work had been halted for lack of funds

The first striking buildings we came to were amphitheaters where plays and concerts could have been given

We walk on, Maria keeping us to a good pace as she knew the crowds would soon come

This is a deep groove in a doorway to a fast-food store. The groove is for a sliding door which saved space.

Here is the serving station of a take-away food store. Food would have been kept warm in clay pots
heated from below

On the narrow streets you can see the marks left by years of carts and chariots passing through.
The 3 raised stones were there so that people could cross the street when it was running wet with rain.

Entrance to a wealthy merchant's private residence

Occasionally, on a hilly street, you would get a view out of the claustrophobically narrow streets to the mountains beyond

More to follow..........
