Pompeii continued

Here you can see a large tour group is coming behind us so we needed to keep ahead of them

No entry to this section which was the vestibule of a rich merchant's home with a small decorative pool just inside the front door

You can see that walls were a combination of uniform bricks as we would use today, and stones.

Crossing a small square which was surrounded by bath houses

There were separate bath houses for men and for women. They were places to relax and chat-and places to come clean. The waters were heated.

They were richly decorated inside. These faded colors are 2,000 years old.

Cubicles around the walls held the bather's clothes while they were in the hot tubs

Detailed artwork

Pompeii was close enough to Rome that wealthy Romans could visit to enjoy a holiday by the sea so it had hotels and restaurants to cater for an influx of visitors.

A last look inside the baths. Ceiling detail. Another tour group had caught up to us by this time in the cramped quarters of the baths so having seen all we needed to see we went back out into the grassy square and continued on our tour.

More to come.....
