Museum day

Houston Museum of Natural Science

A Planetarium and an IMAX theater had some interesting showings but we didn't have time as we were going to the Opera that evening. There's an extra charge for IMAX films.

We were headed first to the Butterfly Center. We have butterflies in our garden at home but not on this scale.

Before you get to the actual butterflies there are many interactive experiences for children and insect exhibits. It's a great place for inquisitive kids to learn.

Meet the Beetles

A tarantula spider

As a city Houston is known for it's heat and humidity. The butterfly house is a giant glass dome with a waterfall in the middle so it raised the humidity to a whole new level.  Dress accordingly!

The butterflies are free to fly wherever they want within the dome. Some will land on the ground you are walking on so be careful not the squash the performers!

Sunlight blazing through the window can "blow-out" your shot, alas

I had to use a high shutter speed to stop the wings blurring in some of these shots where the butterfly is hovering. I think it was 1/2000 of a second

Carol has a butterfly identification chart, which you pick up at the entrance

A lizard which doesn't eat butterflies....

Two snakes, luckily behind glass

The waterfall ends up in a pool in the basement level

On the way out of the exhibit there are large mirrors so you can check your clothing to ensure that no butterflies are going home with you.

Next up-a fantastic prehistoric animal collection. Dinosaurs!
