Arrival in Valetta harbor, Malta

We had an excursion scheduled for Valetta, Malta -the old capital of Medina and it was timed to leave before Sabatini's would open for breakfast so we ordered room service breakfast to be delivered at 6 a.m.

Therefore I was up by 5 a.m and up on the pool deck having coffee when I saw the Valetta pilot boat pulling up alongside the Ocean Princess to let the pilot climb onboard to guide us into the harbor.

The long walk back to our cabin....

The view from the balcony

Soon I could see land ahoy! Some photos from here on in may be less than perfection as I had to hold the shutter open to get some light into the camera and the ship was moving- not a great combination.

We are entering the harbor

Once we get more light and slow down the photos will get sharper- I promise!

The sun is beginning to light the sky.

Getting better!

Up ahead at right I see some oil rigs in the Valetta shipyards

I am busy taking photos to the left and to the right trying not to miss anything and also shooting video between camera shots.

The large white building at the right is a water filtration plant to convert sea water to drinking water as Malta is a very dry country. It hadn't rained since April...

We docked in the dark just as breakfast arrived and we ate it in our cabin. It was not as good (and certainly not as hot!) as a Sabatini breakfast but it helped us face the day ashore: toast, coffee, bacon and eggs with potatoes.

The darkness had gone when I went back onto the balcony. Teams of men on shore were dismantling large lighting and sound towers that had been used for a Festival over the weekend.

Once breakfast was over we got dressed and ready for an exciting day ashore.

Here is my early morning video as we approached Valetta harbor.....
